Summary
The Apollo Essential Skills in Care course, which is supported by NHS England, is designed to provide a first step for those thinking about working in health and social care who may not have the experience or qualifications they need to do so. The course provides an introduction to core topics that are relevant to all healthcare roles, ranging from practical care skills to person-centred care, first aid, and safeguarding.
This free course is delivered face-to-face at City College Norwich's Ipswich Road and Norfolk House campuses or at Paston College in North Walsham.
We offer two different learning structures:

Essential Skills in Care Course - Flexible Learning Structure:
8-week course, commitment of 6 hours per week.
Learners must attend one 3-hour lesson per week, either on a Wednesday morning 10am – 1pm or Wednesday evening 5pm – 8pm.
Enrichment activities and individual support available on Wednesday afternoons 1:30pm – 3:30pm.
Based at City College Norwich, Ipswich Road, NR2 2LJ. -
Essential Skills in Care Course - Guided Learning Structure:
4-week course, commitment of 14 hours per week.
Learners must attend 2 days per week on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:30am – 3:30pm.
The current course dates at our Norwich campuses are, as follows:
- Norwich Guided Learning course: Mondays and Tuesdays, 9:30am – 3:30pm. 18th November – 10th December. Introduction session on 11th November.
- Norwich Flexible Learning course: Wednesdays, 10am – 1pm or 5pm – 8pm. 27th November – 29th January (excluding 25th December and 1st January). Introduction session on 20th November.
The current course dates at Paston College in Norwich Walsham are:
- Paston Guided Learning course: Mondays and Tuesdays, 9:30am – 3:30pm. 13th January – 4th February. Introduction session on 6th January.
Entry Requirements
- Must be aged 18+
- Desire to seek employment or develop your skills in Health & Social Care
- If you are not a fluent English speaker, you must have a minimum of, or be studying towards, an ESOL Entry Level 3 qualification. If you are unsure about this, please contact Apollo@ccn.ac.uk
Learning Outcomes
- You will have the skills to work in a Health & Social Care setting.
Assessment
- You will be assessed by completing workbooks on some of the key aspects of the Care Certificate.
- Part of the requirement of the course is to track and monitor your progression into employment or further training.
